I have been influenced by a wide variety of artists. Steve Hillage has been a particularly strong influence on me, from his work with Gong, through his solo work, production work, and his latest albums with System7. The way he has kept the spirit of experimental electronic music with soul alive since the late 60's is a constant source of inspiration, and he always produces excellent, emotive, innovative music. Detroit Techno has also been a considerable musical influence on me, especially Carl Craig, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins. The warmth and emotional quality of Detroit Techno made it stand out to me, and made it a logical progression of the Jazz, Soul and Blues I grew up with. Roni Size was also a huge influence, and opened me up to Drum & Bass as a continuation and synthesis of many different genres that have resonated with me (Jazz, House, Techno, and Dub).
In terms of live performance, Orbital were probably the biggest single influence on my live sets, particularly in the way they use pattern based sequencers (6 MMT8s) to improvise a set, and incorporate live timbral and effects modification.
I have also been fortunate enough to experience live performances by System7 (great live interplay between guitar and keyboards), Aphex Twin (amazing classical ambient breakbeat with massive fluorescent teddy bears fighting on stage, while Richard James lay down and smoked a cigar), Underworld, 808 State (fantastic to hear "Pacific" and "Kubik" played live), Air Liquide, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers (great vibe, when they still used the old analogue synths, and "Exit Planet Dust" was about to come out), Plastikman (live TB303 tweaking, minimal, echoing beats and helicopter noises), The Advent (heavy Techno), Salt Tank (cool live MIDI guitar, and soaring melodies), Ken Ishii (beautiful Detroit inspired Japanese Techno), Lionrock, Spring Heeled Jack (deep D&B), Eat Static (loved their live set, all mixed from the biggest desk I've ever seen on stage, with live drum rolls from manipulating the tempo knob on a TR505, and they had a great stage set with glowing brain and spaceship), Adam Starr, Digitalis, (great breakbeat trance) Higher Intelligence Agency, Man Made Man, Velvet (very funky, live House, TR909 and full band) and Leftfield.
I have performed live on the radio, and in clubs and cafes around Victoria BC, Canada, improvising my own electronic music with synthesizers, sequencers, samplers and drum machines. My music has been played out by some of the top DJs in Victoria (Yosseff, Rennie "Dubnut" Foster, Ariz0na) and on various radio shows (Tribalife, Really Good Music, BPM sessions, Resonance).
